The Martin Luther King, Jr. D.C. Support Group, Inc. was founded on January 16, 1972 under the name of “the Committee to commemorate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” Dr. Helen V. Tate shared her idea with the General Baptist Deacons Association and its Women’s Auxiliary. The name of the organization changed in 1984 shortly after the President of the United States signed into law the legislation that made Dr. King’s birthday a national holiday, beginning in 1986. The King Center adopted a resolution recognizing the Support Group as the official support group for the King Center in the Washington, D.C. area. During the ensuing years, the D.C. Support Group has been tremendously successful in support of the King Center, in Atlanta, GA. Teamsters Local 639 joined the Support Group in the early 80’s and continues to make significant contributions that enhance our Youth Scholarship Program. .

The MLK, Jr. Support Group supports the completion of the King Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C.

The MLK, Jr. D.C. Support Group planned and produced King Week in the District of Columbia modeled on the King Center’s observance in Atlanta and developed a humanitarian service award that is bestowed annually on a deserving individual for their humanitarian efforts in the Washington Metropolitan area.
The MLK, Jr. D.C. Support Group operates as a non-profit corporation 501 ( C ) 3.
